The shift

Search returned a list. AI returns one answer.

For two decades, visibility meant ranking position. Every brand had a slot on the page. AI changed that model permanently.

When a consumer asks “best protein powder for women” or “top skincare brands for sensitive skin,” an AI system doesn't return a ranked list. It generates a single answer. It names specific brands. It cites sources it trusts. If your brand is not in that answer, you don't exist in that moment.

01

AI generates answers, not lists

An AI names two or three brands. One answer. Everyone else is absent from that moment of consideration.

02

Absence is structural, not random

Brands are absent because AI systems cannot reliably understand or retrieve them — not because the brand lacks quality or market position.

03

The gap compounds every quarter

Brands being cited accumulate authority signals that reinforce future citations. Brands being ignored fall further behind. The distance grows measurably.

04

SEO investment does not solve this

A brand can hold the top organic result on Google while having near-zero AI citation presence. AI evaluates entity clarity and semantic authority — not backlinks.

Three steps from invisible to authoritative.

02

ARIA maps every query where competitors appear and you don't. PIQO identifies exactly which content signals are missing. ECHO finds every authority gap.

03

IndexGrid deploys structured content, entity signals, and authority infrastructure — systematically closing the gap between where you are and where you need to be.

Category definition

What is AI Commerce Identity?

AI Commerce Identityis the structured, machine-readable representation of a brand's identity, products, authority, and expertise that enables AI systems to accurately understand, retrieve, and recommend that brand in response to relevant commerce queries. Every commerce brand operating in an AI-native world requires one. Without it, AI systems cannot reliably represent a brand — regardless of market position, product quality, or SEO performance.

An AI Commerce Identity is not content, not metadata, and not SEO. It is infrastructure — four layers that together determine whether AI systems can reliably represent a brand. Without all four, AI systems fill the gaps with uncertainty or silence.

ACI — Cause

The identity infrastructure that determines whether AI systems can reliably understand and recommend your brand. Built through entity clarity, authority, semantic structure, and citation networks.

RSOV — Outcome

The measured result. How often AI systems cite your brand versus competitors. The number that tells you exactly where you stand — and how far the gap is.

Four infrastructure layers

01

Entity layer

How AI systems identify and categorize your brand. Consistency of brand name, category, and distinguishing characteristics across all indexed sources.

02

Authority layer

How AI systems assess your credibility. The density, consistency, and quality of third-party sources that describe your brand as authoritative in its category.

03

Semantic layer

How AI systems understand and describe your products. Whether your content is structured in a form AI systems can extract, synthesize, and cite accurately.

04

Citation layer

How AI systems retrieve and reference your brand. Whether your brand appears in the citation networks AI systems use to generate authoritative answers.

How AI systems actually work

AI systems don't retrieve brands randomly.

They are trained on vast datasets of human-written content — reviews, articles, forum discussions, product comparisons — and they develop statistical confidence about which brands are authoritative in which categories.

The brands that appear consistently, described accurately, across trusted third-party sources accumulate retrieval probability. The brands that do not, do not.

This is not an algorithm you can game. It is an identity problem. IndexGrid solves it at the infrastructure level.

IndexGrid has identified 10 measurable signalsacross four layers that determine a brand's retrieval probability in AI systems. These signals can be audited, scored, and improved systematically — which is why RSOV improvement is measurable within weeks, not years.

The standard metric

Retrieval Share of Voice: the metric that tells you how much of the AI buying conversation your brand owns.

Retrieval Share of Voice (RSOV) is the percentage of AI-generated responses, citations, and recommendations in a defined commerce category that include a specific brand — measured across major AI systems over a defined time period.

RSOV = ( Brand AI Citations ÷ Total Category AI Citations ) × 100

If your category generates 1,000 AI-cited brand mentions per month and your brand appears in 80 of them — your RSOV is 8%. If your top competitor appears in 340 — their RSOV is 34%. That 26-point gap is your AI visibility deficit. It is measurable, trackable, and closable.

RSOV is to AI Commerce Identity what share of voice was to traditional media: the foundational competitive visibility metric.

IndexGrid platform

Measurement, structure, authority. One complete stack.

IndexGrid is not an agency, a content service, or an SEO tool. It is infrastructure — deployed once, running continuously, compounding over time. Three systems that together cover the complete AI Commerce Identity stack. No system works in isolation. All three are required for durable results.

ARIA

Measurement system

AI Retrieval Intelligence Architecture

ARIA is IndexGrid's measurement infrastructure that produces your RSOV score — the industry-standard metric for AI visibility — continuously across 6 AI systems. It maps your competitive citation landscape at the query level and alerts you when your AI visibility changes.

  • Live RSOV dashboard across 6 AI systems
  • Competitor citation frequency and positioning
  • Query-level retrieval map: which questions trigger your category, and who appears
  • Visibility gap analysis: high-intent queries where competitors appear and you do not
  • Weekly delta alerts with directional movement tracking

PIQO

Structure system

Product Intelligence Query Object

PIQO structures your brand and product content so that AI systems can understand it, extract it, and cite it reliably. Most commerce brands are AI-invisible not because they lack authority — but because their content is not structured in a form AI systems can interpret. PIQO closes that gap at the content layer.

  • AI-extractable product schemas across your full catalog
  • Brand entity profiles that propagate into AI retrieval environments
  • Semantic content layers that define what you sell and why you are authoritative
  • Retrieval Readiness Score: a 0–100 measure of your content's AI extractability

ECHO

Authority system

Authority Propagation System

ECHO tracks the external authority signals that AI systems use to evaluate which brands to trust — and maps exactly where your authority is strong, where it is absent, and what to build next. Authority is not built inside your own website — it is built in the sources AI systems trust most.

  • Editorial and media brand mention tracking
  • Creator citation monitoring across YouTube and major platforms
  • Reddit, forum, and community discussion tracking
  • Citation network mapping: which sources reference you together, and with what consistency
  • Authority velocity versus competitors: how fast your citation network is growing

“Our SEO agency could build RSOV tracking. Why IndexGrid?”

Historical data cannot be purchased retroactively. An agency starting today can track RSOV from now — they cannot tell you what your RSOV was eight months ago, how it moved when a competitor launched, or where the category gap opened. That time-series is the asset. It compounds the longer you wait.

The measurement

How AI Commerce Identity is scored

The AI Commerce Identity Score (ACI) is a 0–100 composite of 10 independently auditable signals across the four layers above. It is calculated by deterministic code, not AI judgement — every signal is documented, weighted, and reproducible by any independent auditor.

Your ACI score does two things: it tells you exactly where you stand on the infrastructure your brand needs to be retrieved by AI systems, and it identifies precisely which gaps are responsible for your current RSOV deficit.
